Sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite!

Are the bed bugs keeping you up at night?  You know, the ones that wander around in your head and don't seem to go away no matter what you do?


My mother made a joke of it most of my life, saying I slept like a log all night and making an extra point about how lucky I was. Continuously I heard from her about how limited her night sleeps were and how easily she was to wake to the sound of a pin, always finishing off with a sigh that sounded like "ah well, i guess that's life and that's what I got to deal with". Along the way I heard similar stories from other people also who went further labeling it 'insomnia'.

 

I've recently accepted greater responsibilities in my life and have had some major life experiences that have left me, well, more conscious about things through the night!  This has meant less sleep time and more disturbed sleep nights.  Sounding familiar?

 

To my great good fortune though I've been able to draw on my time and what I've learnt while walking a spiritual path that has equipped me with some pretty good tools that I can safely apply to almost most of life's circumstances, one of which is relevant and I can share with you here today.

 

Viparita Karani aka Legs Up the Wall pose or in this case Legs up the bedhead! [See figure to the left]. Yes the king of restorative postures, aside from Savasana (Corpse) pose that is, particularly great for kicking in the parasympathetic nervous system for 'sleep time', lowering the heart rate, leading the brain into the brain wave for sleep time, not to mention at the same time giving your lymphatic system a good boost! And what's that good for? Watch this space...

 

If you're already familiar with this gem of a posture you'll be hearing me right now. For those who aren't, well now's your chance to get in on some tricks of the trade AND get some real juice out of your yoga practice.

 

"How?" I hear you ask... Get into this posture 5 minutes before your bedtime and have yourself a full night's sleep. "But wait...", I hear you say, "can't be possible....I've had trouble getting a full night's sleep for a long time and I'm bound to wake up again through the night!" If you wake up again through the night, easy, just get into the posture again, for up to 5 minutes, and back to sleep you go. Repeat this for as long as you are willing and overtime your brain will get acquainted to this new way of being and will start to kick in the relevant brain wave for sleep time on it's own and for the whole night.  If you really want to be clever, try it at the same time each night... And of course, if 5 minutes is too long, start with 1 minute and build it up to 5 minutes.
